Aalborg Portland spearheads low carbon offer within Cementir Group’s sustainability roadmap

FutureCEM™, an innovative and sustainable cement technology of the future, is now gaining further momentum. Aalborg Portland, is working closely with key customers to identify more effective ways of increasing its green transition efforts. With a carbon footprint up to 30 percent lower than ordinary Portland cement, FutureCEM™ technology phases out conventional cement and contributes significantly to both Cementir Group and the entire construction industry’s green transition.

FutureCEM™ plays a key role in Cementir Group’s sustainability road map to dramatically reduce carbon emissions and help Denmark reach its national 70 percent carbon reduction target by 2030. The group’s Danish subsidiary, Aalborg Portland, is already introducing its carbon-friendly FutureCEM™ to the Danish construction industry.

“FutureCEM™ and its sustainable cement technology is crucial to the construction industry’s green transition here in Denmark. We are taking proactive steps to ensure an increase in demand for low carbon cement and collaborating closely with key customers to implement a plan to significantly reduce carbon emissions. Agreements have been made with customers to phase out traditional types of cement within the next 18 months. Our ambitious carbon reduction goals are now beginning to align with our sustainability roadmap and sales are picking up hence we expect to reach our volume target for 2021 as well. Conversion from high carbon cement to FutureCEM™ low carbon cement is now fully underway”, states Søren Holm Christensen, Aalborg Portland CEO in Denmark.

“Our technological capabilities and ongoing investments listed in the sustainability roadmap enable us to make premium low carbon solutions like FutureCEM™ as competitive as regular high carbon products. Ultimately, this boosts structural change towards a greener portfolio”, Søren Holm Christensen emphasises.

FutureCEM™ is one of many chapters in its green transition. Continual research, development, and investment will help develop newer types of carbon-friendly cement. Alongside FutureCEM™, Aalborg Portland is also managing the R&D project CALLISTE (Calcined Clay Limestone Technology Extension) in collaboration with the Danish Technological Institute and co-funded by Innovation Fund Denmark. Their goal with CALLISTE is to reach a 50 percent clinker reduction compared to ordinary Portland cement, thus reducing the carbon footprint even further.
